A 251bp deletion in hpo. The resulting predicted gene product lacks the C-terminal 90 amino acids.
When somatic clones of hpo42-20 homozygous cells are generated throughout the eye disc using Scer\FLP1ey.PN with P{neoFRT}42D, 90% of the animals survive the pupal stage and eclose. The resulting flies have less overgrowth and folding of eyes and head cuticle, and greater numbers of well defined ommatidial facets than if hpo42-47 is used.

Nine out of ten independent transgenic hpo+t4.0 lines tested fully rescue hpo42-20. The remaining insertion line (P{hpo.t4.0}star) partially only partially rescues: 34% of animals eclose, and these display a range of phenotypes such as held-out wings and mild overgrowth.
