Homozygotes and ed4.12/edlH23 flies have a rough eye phenotype. Twinning of R8 photoreceptor cells is seen in ed4.12/ed4.12, ed4.12/ed4.4, ed4.12/ed6.1 and ed4.12/Df(2L)ed-dp animals. Variation in the number and arrangement of R7 and other photoreceptors is seen in ed4.12 eyes. The presence of extra R7 cells is correlated very strongly with the presence of extra R8 cells.
ed4.12 homozygous flies have extra dorsocentral, scutellar and recurved wing margin bristles (chemosensory ventral triple row + dorsal triple row). They also have extra thoracic microchaetae.

The rough eye phenotype and R8 cell twinning phenotype caused by expression of atoScer\UAS.cJa under the control of Scer\GAL4sca-109-68 is dominantly enhanced by ed4.12. The ed4.12 R8 cell twinning phenotype is not altered by N55e11/+. The ed4.12 R8 cell twinning phenotype is strongly suppressed by Egfrf2/+ or Ras85Dunspecified/+. The ed4.12 R8 cell twinning phenotype is strongly enhanced by argosΔ7/+. Egfrf2 clones in the eye disc induced in a homozygous ed4.12 background show abnormal spacing of R8 cells in the clone, but R8 cells rarely appear twinned. The ed4.12 R8 cell twinning phenotype is not affected in spiSC2 homozygous clones in a ed4.12 background.
ed4.12/ed4.12; N55e11/+ flies have an increased number of sensillum precursor cells specified. In many instances these sensillum precursor cells divide to produce four neurons rather than the wild type external sensory organ. ed4.12/ed4.12; Dlunspecified/+ flies have additional shaft (trichogen) cells The increased bristle number in ed4.12; scaBP2 double homozygotes is consistent with an additive rather than a synergistic effect of the two muations.
