    Detailed Description

Blocking neural transmission in Scer\GAL421D (L2)-expressing neurons results in defects in turning responses to rotational visual motion, exhibiting strong deficits in turning to moving dark edges (a transition from brighter to darker), although some dark edge response remains. In an opposing edge assay (in which light and dark edges move in opposite directions) the flies turn in the direction of the light edge motion.

When neurons expressing Scer\GAL4c202a (L1) and Scer\GAL421D (L2) are both silenced the flies do not respond to rotational stimuli.

Flies show no turning at all in response to moving dark edges (a transition from brighter to darker) when both Scer\GAL421D (L2) and Scer\GAL40595 (L3)-expressing neurons are silenced, and turn more strongly towards light edge motion in an opposing edge assay than when only L2 neurons are silenced. The flies display turning responses to light edges.

Additionally silencing Scer\GAL40987 (L4)-expressing neurons does not enhance the defects in rotational visual motion response seen when Scer\GAL421D (L2)-expressing neurons are silenced.

Blocking neural transmission in Scer\GAL421D (L2)-expressing neurons results in reduced modulation of forward walking speed in response to to translational stimuli compared with controls. Responses are decreased to both front-to-back and back-to-front moving square gratings.

Additionally silencing Scer\GAL4c202a (L1)-expressing neurons does not enhance the defects in translational motion response seen when Scer\GAL421D (L2)-expressing neurons are silenced.

Additionally silencing Scer\GAL40987 (L4)-expressing neurons does not enhance the defects in translational motion response seen when Scer\GAL421D (L2)-expressing neurons are silenced.

Flies show very little modulation of forward walking speed in response to front-to-back translational motion when both Scer\GAL421D (L2) and Scer\GAL40595 (L3)-expressing neurons are silenced and no detectable slowing in response to back-to-front motion.
