Expression of DroncS130A.UAS.cSa under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PFa results in a strong eye depigmentation phenotype adult flies (vast majority of photoreceptors are without pigment).

Overexpression of Dcp-1Scer\UAS.cKa under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF induces a marked increase in the number of caspase-3-positive puncta compared with wild-type eye discs, indicating an increase in cell death.

Expression of Dcp-1Scer\UAS.cKa under the control of Scer\GAL4elav-C155 results in severe motoneuron degeneration. Axons have a narrower caliber and there is clear evidence of axonal breaks and fragmentation, as well as degeneration at the nerve terminal. Synaptic transmission is also severely disrupted. Expression of Dcp-1Scer\UAS.cKa in single motorneuron axons using Scer\GAL4eve.RRa shows that the axonal degeneration does not spread to adjacent wild type axons innervating the same muscle target, and nor do these axons undergo any compensatory growth. No neuronal sprouting is seen at sites of broken axons and TUNEL assays show that motorneuron cell death is occurring. Expression of Dcp-1Scer\UAS.cKa in the glia under the control of Scer\GAL4egr-GAL4 has no effect on motorneuron degeneration.

Flies expressing Dcp-1Scer\UAS.cKa (insertion line P{UAS-Dcp-1.K}19-2) under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF display a modest rough eye phenotype. This rough eye phenotype is also seen in the P{UAS-Dcp-1.K}1-2, P{UAS-Dcp-1.K}2-4, P{UAS-Dcp-1.K}4-1 P{UAS-Dcp-1.K}5-4 and P{UAS-Dcp-1.K}7-3 insertion lines. Flies carrying two copies of P{UAS-Dcp-1.K}19-2 and Scer\GAL4GMR.PF display a much more severe eye phenotype. These flies are semi-lethal and have a short lifespan.

The insertion lines P{UAS-Dcp-1.K}1-1, P{UAS-Dcp-1.K}1-2, P{UAS-Dcp-1.K}1-4, P{UAS-Dcp-1.K}1-5, P{UAS-Dcp-1.K}2-4 and P{UAS-Dcp-1.K}4-1 show male pupal lethality.
