G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are seven-transmembrane spanning receptors that couple extracellular signaling events to intracellular effector molecules. GPCRs signal via heterotrimeric G proteins (Gα.Gβγ) associated on the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane. Agonist-binding by the GPCR promotes the release of Gα from Gβγ which targets downstream effectors such as adenylate cyclases, ion channels and phospholipases. (Adapted from
