Gene Summary
Selenophosphate synthetase 2 (Sps2) is essential for selenoprotein biosynthesis. It encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of selenophosphate from selenide and/or other selenium metabolites. Selenophosphate is an active selenium donor for the formation of selenocysteine. [Date last reviewed: 2018-11-15] (FlyBase Gene Snapshot)

Gene Group (FlyBase)
UNCLASSIFIED KINASES -
This group comprises kinases that do not classify under other groups in FlyBase.
SELENOPROTEINS -
Selenoproteins arise from the differential decoding of the UGA stop codon as selenocysteine. Compared with other eukaryotes, arthropods show a reduced complement of selenoproteins. (Adapted from FBrf0216226.)
Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Synthesizes selenophosphate from selenide and ATP.

If you don't see a structure in the viewer, refresh your browser.
Model Confidence:
  • Very high (pLDDT > 90)
  • Confident (90 > pLDDT > 70)
  • Low (70 > pLDDT > 50)
  • Very low (pLDDT < 50)

AlphaFold produces a per-residue confidence score (pLDDT) between 0 and 100. Some regions with low pLDDT may be unstructured in isolation.

Testis-specificity index

The testis specificity index was calculated from modENCODE tissue expression data by Vedelek et al., 2018 to indicate the degree of testis enrichment compared to other tissues. Scores range from -2.52 (underrepresented) to 5.2 (very high testis bias).

Additional Descriptive Data

Sps2 transcripts accumulate in the oocyte and levels remain high up to the blastoderm stage. Amount of transcript subsequently decreases, to reappear again in the midgut anlagen of the gastrula. Later, transcripts are enriched in a variety of tissues and organs including the gut and the nervous system.
