Fragment containing the 'AID' degron from the Arabidopsis thaliana AtIAA17 gene (TAIR:Locus:2018374). This degron sequence targets a protein for proteasomal degradation in an auxin-dependent manner, provided that a plant TIR1 F-box protein is also provided. TIR1 orthologs are only found in plant species, but are able to incorporate into an SCF E3 ubiquitin ligase complex if expressed in non-plant cells. In the presence of auxin, the SCF-TIR1 complex binds to the AID degron sequence and recruits an E2 ligase, resulting in polyubiquitylation of the AID degron. Thus if a protein of interest is tagged with this sequence, it it is targeted for degradation in an auxin-dependent manner (PMID:19915560, FBrf0235096).
