Detailed Description

In cup21 homozygous adult females, a fraction of nurse cells condense their chromosomes and enter an ectopic mitosis after stage 5 of oogenesis.

Egg chambers arrest at stage S14. Nurse cell nuclear chromatin in the oldest egg chambers shows variable condensation. Flies are weakly fertile. The small fraction of embryos derived from homozygous females that do develop have condensed, irregularly spaced nuclei at the cleavage stage.

Abnormalities in follicle cell migration: open ended chorion.

The ovarian phenotype of cup21 homozygous females is enhanced if they are also heterozygous for one of miraAB78, miraJJ92, miraL44 or miraYY227; a greater fraction of egg chambers arrest development between stages 3 and 5 in the double mutant ovaries compared to in the single mutant ovaries.

The oogenesis defects seen in cup21 females are enhanced if they are also heterozygous for Hsp8319F2 or Hsp83e6A; double mutants show earlier egg chamber growth arrest and precocious degeneration of the nurse cell nuclei. The double mutant egg chambers are often misshapen, with egg chambers either unbudded or fused (seen by the presence of supernumerary nurse cell nuclei in the egg chamber).

The size of the ovaries in cup21 homozygous adults is reduced by eIF-4E07238/+. Chromosome morphology in the nurse cells of these ovaries is unaffected by eIF-4E07238/+, but oogenesis is blocked at an earlier stage (around stage 6).

The oogenesis defects seen in hemizygous nos18 females are substantially suppressed by one copy of cup21. Many egg chambers in the rescued ovaries appear normal and mature into oocytes that are fertilised and oviposited (the resulting embryos develop no abdominal segments). The rescued females lay eggs for at least 3 weeks.
