Somatic clones of baz815-8 homozygous mutant cells in the pupal eye disc show extra inter-ommatidial cells and increased frequency of disruptions in the structure of adherens junctions.
Homozygous clones in the follicle cells results in multilayering of the follicle cell epithelium and gaps are also sometimes seen. Single mutant cells adjacent to wild-type cells undergo morphological changes similar to a epithelial-mesenchymal transition.
The number of filopodia at the leading edge is significantly reduced in mutant embryos.
Larvae expressing bazdsRNA.cRa.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4C57 in the muscles in a baz815-8/+ background show an increase in evoked excitatory junctional potential (EJP) amplitude compared to controls, and the amplitude and frequency of miniature EJPs is increased in these animals compared to wild type.
the majority of mutant egg chambers (baz815-8 homozygous germline clones) stop growing at stage 5 and adopt an oval shape. Furthermore, none of the cells in the cyst accumulate higher levels of cortical actin that are normally found around the oocyte, though two cells with four ring canals lie at the posterior of the mutant egg chamber, as in wild-type. In females dissected 2 days post eclosion, 14% of cysts contain a normal oocyte, whereas 86% arrest at stage 5 with the 16 nurse cell phenotype. The frequency of normal egg chambers falls to about 3% if the females are dissected after 6 days. In wild-type cysts, centrosomes migrate along the fusome to cluster at the anterior of the oocyte in region 2b, and then translocate to the posterior of the oocyte in region 3. In mutant cysts, the centrosomes accumulate at the anterior of the oocyte, but never move to the posterior cortex. Microtubules also remain focused on the anterior of the oocyte and fail to rearrange.
The mitotic spindle of trunk epidermal cells occasionally has an aberrant orientation in embryos. Defects in localisation of ganglion mother cells are seen. The longitudinal axon pathway that is formed by fasciculation of the MP1, pCC, dMP2 and vMP2 neurons does not form.
