Mutant larval have a "lawn of denticles" cuticle phenotype.

When homozygous somatic clones are induced during the larval second instar, clones and twin spots are of similar size. Earlier induction, during the first instar, causes a reduction in size of mutant clones in the wing-blade primordium. Homozygous somatic clones at the wing margin cause the formation of ectopic wing margin bristles in adjacent wild-type territory. No planar polarity defects are observed in clones on adult wings. Embryos with maternal pan2, display segment polarity phenotypes resembling those of zygotic pan2 mutants. The alternation of naked cuticle and denticle belts seen in wild-type is replaced by an under-representation of naked cuticle. Embryos with both maternal and zygotic pan2, do not exhibit a stronger phenotype than those lacking maternal pan only. These phenotypes can be significantly rescued by paternal pan.

    Ventral segment polarity defects.

Regions of naked cuticle are replaced by cuticle with denticles. Head segments are relatively unaffected.

pan2 partially suppresses the wgl-17 denticle phenotype: denticle diversity is restored but not naked cuticle.

In wgl-17 ckKT9 ; pan2 triple mutants, smaller anterior denticles can have sharp points, while larger posterior denticles remain rounded and some appear fragmented.

Approximately 56.7% of pan2/+ ; SoxNNC14/+ double mutants appear phenotypically wild-type. Approximately 18.6% of mutants exhibit a 'lawn of denticles' phenotype, typical of arm mutants. The SoxNNC14 mutation disrupts the dorsal pattern and reduces the size of the embryos. A SoxN-like phenotype is observed in approximately 18.9% of the double mutants. Approximately 5.8% of the double mutants exhibit a severe excess-naked-cuticle SoxN-like phenotype. The double mutants exhibit more extensive naked cuticle than SoxNNC14 single mutants.

Approximately 55.9% of pan2/+ ; SoxNGA1192/+ double mutants appear phenotypically wild-type. Approximately 19.2% of mutants exhibit a 'lawn of denticles' phenotype, typical of arm mutants. The SoxNGA1192 mutation disrupts the dorsal pattern and reduces the size of the embryos. A SoxN-like phenotype is observed in approximately 17.7% of the double mutants. Approximately 7.2% of the double mutants exhibit a severe excess-naked-cuticle SoxN-like phenotype. The double mutants exhibit more extensive naked cuticle than SoxNGA1192 single mutants.

SoxNU6-35/+ partially suppresses the formation of ectopic denticles seen in pan2 mutant larvae, while pan2 ; SoxNU6-35 double mutants have the same cuticle phenotype as SoxNU6-35 single mutants.

Somatic clones homozygous for both sgg32 and pan2 show a suppression of the ectopic bristle phenotype seen in sgg32 clones alone.

pan2,pucA251.1F3 double mutants show a novel loss of dorsal cuticle phenotype.

pan2/+ significantly partially suppresses the decreased lifespan seen in flies with expression of Hsap\HTTQ93.ex1p.Scer\UAS driven by Scer\GAL4Eaat1.PR.

Heterozygosity for pan2 enhances the loss of rhabdomeres seen in Hsap\HTTGMR.Q120 flies.
