Expressing mbt^UAS.cMa under the control of Scer\GAL4^hs.2sev in an mbt^P1/mbt^P1 background leads to the formation of a significant proportion of elongated CadN-immunopositive adherens junctions between photoreceptor precursor cells R3 and R4 in row 5 ommatidia of wandering third instar larvae.

The eyes of mbt^Scer\UAS.cMa; Scer\GAL4^elav.PLu adults are normal sized and have only minor defects: a few bristles are missing; a few ommatidia are misshapen. Differentiation of photoreceptor cells and F-actin organization in the eye discs of these animals appears normal - although many eye discs bulge abnormally around the equator. Only subtle defects are visible at mid-pupal stages - occasional extra cone cells, misplaced bristles and misplaced adherens junctions.
