Embryos derived from homozygous germline clones show segmentation defects, with loss of denticle belts.
Mosaics in which almost all of the eye is homozygous for sbb1 while other tissues are heterozygous (clones generated using the "eyFLP" system) show striking defects in photoreceptor axon projections; photoreceptor axons project normally through the optic stalk to the brain, but fail to segregate into their distinct target layers. Only a vestigial lamina plexus is formed, while thick bundles of photoreceptor axons project through to the medulla. R1-R6 photoreceptor axons overshoot their targets in sbb1/sbb04440 or sbb1/sbbk00702 transheterozygous larvae. Cells in homozygous clones in the eye imaginal disc undergo normal photoreceptor differentiation.
sbb1 is partially rescued by sbbA.GMR.Tag:MYC
The photoreceptor R1-R6 cell targeting defects of sbb1 mosaics (in which almost all of the eye is homozygous for sbb1 while other tissues are heterozygous) are partially rescued by sbbA.GMR.T:Hsap\MYC; most R1-R6 axons correctly target the lamina, although a small number of R1-R6 axons in each hemisphere, predominantly those in the posterior regions of the eye, still project through the lamina to terminate in the medulla.
Selected as: a mutation that autonomously disrupts the projection patterns of photoreceptor axons from the eye imaginal disc into the optic lobe of the brain.
