Wing blade area is reduced by approximately 20% in homozygous sl9 mutant males compared to wild type. The area of the eye is also reduced by about 8% compared to controls. sl9 mutant flies also show a 9% reduction in the number of ommatidia (sl9 mutant eyes have on average 698 ommatidia compared to 765 in wild type). sl9 mutant eyes have an increased number of R7 photoreceptors per ommatidium, but the combined area of the R1-R6 rhabdomeres is reduced by on average 15.2% compared to heterozygous controls indicating a reduced cell size.
Two day old homozygous sl9 mutant females are approximately 8% lighter than their heterozygous siblings. Pupal length and weight of stage 12-15 pupae do not differ from controls.
In the eyes of sl9 homozygous flies, ~9% of ommatidia are misrotated and over half have between one and three extra R7 cells extra photoreceptors. In addition, interommatidial bristles are sometimes misplaced or supernumerary.
58.9% of ommatidia have extra R7 cells in homozygous females. The length of the wing is approximately 80% normal length in homozygous females, and ectopic wing veins are seen. sl8/sl9 and sl7/sl9 females have wing lengths indistinguishable from each other and typical of sl mutant homozygotes. sl8/sl9 females have extra R7 cells in 45.9% of ommatidia. sl7/sl9 females have extra R7 cells in 7.8% of ommatidia.

One copy of InRE19 does not enhance the reduction in wing blade area seen in homozygous sl9 males.
One copy of Akt11 does not enhance the reduction in wing blade area seen in homozygous sl9 males.
One copy of Egfrf2 does not enhance the reduction in wing blade area seen in homozygous sl9 males.
One copy of drke0A does not enhance the reduction in wing blade area seen in homozygous sl9 males.
One copy of Itp-r83AB4 does not enhance the reduction in wing blade area seen in homozygous sl9 males.
One copy of InR93Dj-4 does not enhance the increase in R7 photoreceptor cells per ommatidium that is seen in sl9 mutant males.
One copy of Itp-r83AB4 enhances the percentage of sl9 mutant ommatidia that contain extra R7 photoreceptors. The number of R7 cells per ommatidium is also increased.

sl9 is partially rescued by slX10-P1035A
slScer\UAS.cSa; Scer\GAL4sca-537.4 largely rescues the eye phenotypes seen in sl9/sl9 homozygotes: most ommatidia have normal numbers of photoreceptor cells and only a small proportion have rotation defects.
