Description

Recombination between the two progenitor insertions has resulted in deletion of the genomic sequence between them, which removes almost the entire Drak gene without affecting neighbouring genes.

The wing area of homozygous flies is significantly smaller than that of controls, with the wings being specifically shortened in the proximal-distal axis. The mutant flies sometimes show shortening of the legs, usually restricted to the T3 leg; leg segments (primarily the femur and tibia) are shortened and abnormally bent.

Drakdel/DrakKO adults show a reduction in wing area compared to controls and a partially penetrant phenotype of T3 leg defects.

The shortening of the wing which is seen in Drakdel flies is enhanced if the flies are also heterozygous for one of Rho172O, zip2 or Sb63b.

More than half of Drakdel rok2/Drakdel third instar larvae are missing random elements of the tracheal tree.

The wing discs of Drakdel rok2/DrakKO third instar larvae are composed of unusually thin epithelial layers which are grossly distorted. The wing pouch region has folds which project basally out of the plane of the epithelium, and these distortions are accompanied by massive apoptosis.

100% of Drakdel rok2 double homozygous embryos die before hatching. They show a fully penetrant head defect, which is characterized by an anterior hole in the embryonic cuticle and anterior malformations of the cephalopharyngeal skeleton.

The wing defects of flwG0172 escapers are suppressed by Drakdel. The T3 leg defects seen in Drakdel mutants are suppressed by flwG0172.
