Blockade of all αβ Kenyon cells (by expressing the temperature sensitive shits.UAS.cUa under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR44E04 and shifted to the permissive 33[o]C) decreases olfactory medium term memory (1h) when the experiment is carried out in crowded conditions (groups of 32 flies - socially facilitated memory).
Inhibition (using shi1.UAS at 33[o]C) of Scer\GAL4GMR44E04 cells in adults significantly reduces 5 min or 30 min aversive olfactory memory, including its anaesthesia-resistant component, compared to controls; inhibition during testing significantly reduces medium term (3 h) aversive olfactory memory, but not its anaesthesia-resistant component, compared to controls, with no effect on long term (24 h after massed training) memory; inhibition does not affect olfactory acuity, compared to controls.
