DnaJ-1A/DnaJ-1C transheterozygotes are partially lethal, since only a small minority reaches adulthood, but do not show obvious morphological defects. DnaJ-1A homozygous, DnaJ-1A/DnaJ-1C transheterozygous or DnaJ-1A/Df(3L)BSC884 transheterozygous third instar larvae present a significant increase in both the number and size of circulating crystal cells (identified as Lozenge-positive or PPO1-positive cells, which are still capable of melanization upon heat treatment), while other circulating cells have unaffected size, as compared to controls; heterozygotes also exhibit an increase in the size, but not number, of crystal cells, as compared to controls.

The increased number and size of circulating crystal cells observed in DnaJ-1A/DnaJ-1C transheterozygous third instar larvae is suppressed by the expression of lzScer\UAS.cBa under the control of Scer\GAL4lz-gal4 or by N55e11 heterozygosity.
