Detailed Description

ClC-b1 homozygous individuals injected with the non-pathogenic bacteria, E. coli, are unable to clear the bacteria but do not exhibit a significant decrease in survival, as compared to equally infected controls; ClC-b1/ClC-b2 and ClC-b1/Df(2R)Exel7121 individuals are also unable to clear bacteria after injection.

ClC-b1 homozygous individuals show no alterations in melanization upon wounding or bacterial infection and no changes in the number or size of circulating larval hemocytes, as compared to controls. Isolated circulating naive macrophages from ClC-b1 mutant larvae and adults show delayed clearing of E.coli but normal abilities to engulf/internalize bacteria/bacterial particles upon single infections, as compared to equally infected controls; upon repeated infection, the larval macrophages show decreased uptake of bacteria compared to equally infected controls.
