vihΔN-9/vihΔN-9 females lay fewer eggs than control females

In vihΔN-9 homozygotes and heterozygotes, egg chambers show structural abnormalities as early as oogenesis stage 3, including the plasma membrane collapsing and forming large aggregates in the centre of the egg chamber; unlike controls, most homozygous S1-3 egg chambers show centrosomes retained at nurse cells, often adjacent to ring canals; even the centrosomes that reach the oocyte are frequently mispositioned, lingering around in the anterior region; in addition, centrosomes, which in controls disappear after stage 12, are undetectable after stage 9; in high proportion of cases, the oocyte is initially specified but subsequently loses its identity; some egg chambers show no or supernumerary oocytes; in oogenesis stages 4-6 there is lack of accumulation of microtubules in the oocyte.
