Centrosomes are released from the poles of both cleavage embryo and neuroblast spindles in vih mutants, but anastral and acentrosomal spindles remain relatively stable. These acentrosomal and anastral spindles develop two broad spindle poles, and the chromosomes become overcondensed and scattered throughout these barrel-like bipolar spindles.
The gene is named "vihar" (Hungarian for "storm") after the characteristic mutant phenotype in which chromosomes are scattered throughout the mitotic spindle.
