Opa1s3475/+ heterozygous mutants have significantly reduced mitochondrial length and significantly increased mitochondrial number in axons of adult neurons, compared to controls.

Heterozygotes do not show gross eye phenotypes.

Small homozygous eye clones have a slightly rough appearance at low penetrance.

Large homozygous eye clones (generated in a Minute background) exhibit a robust rough and glossy appearance, together with tissue necrosis of variable onset and penetrance.

opa1-likes3475 mitotic clones in the male germline (i.e. mutant spermatids) exhibit irregularly-shaped nebenkerns, composed of many individual mitochondria that have coalesced beside the nucleus, but have failed to fuse.
