Approximately 50% of homozygous embryos have an abnormal cuticle pattern, with 10-15% of these embryos having a wg- or hh-like cuticle pattern. Homozygous germ line clones are difficult to obtain in females and the rare eggs produced are more spherical than wild-type.

Dominant enhancer of the B1 and hhbar3 eye phenotypes. ptc9 oro1 double homozygous embryos have the same phenotype as ptc9 single mutant embryos, indicating that ptc is epistatic to oro. 96% of oro1 ptc9/oro1 + flies are viable. 46% of oro1 ptc9/Df(2L)al flies are viable. The eyes of ptc9/+ ; hhbar3/hhbar3 and ptc9/oro1; hhbar3/hhbar3 flies are similar in size, suggesting that ptc is epistatic to oro with respect to effects on hhbar3. Dominantly enhances the fu1 wing and ocellus phenotypes.

Isolated in a screen for mutations affecting morphogenetic furrow progression during early eye development. oro1 is a stronger enhancer of the B1 eye phenotype than oro2. Germ line clonal analysis indicates that there is no significant maternal contribution to the embryonic lethal phenotype of oro1.
