X/Y males homozygous for Su(var)2-11 are almost completely lethal, whereas homozygous X/0 males are almost completely viable. The lethality is mainly concentrated at the embryo stage. The lethal interaction between Su(var)2-11 and Y is correlated with size of the Y chromosome fragments, as tested with Df(YL)S10, Df(YS)S12, and Df(YL)S6.

Heterozygotes show no effect on crossing over between kni and pp.

In X/O males carnitine compounds have a lethal interaction.

mod(mdg4)neo129 suppresses the strong dominant suppressor effect.

Suppresses In(1)wm4 and T(2;3)SbV and enhances the variegation phenotype of In(2R)bwVDe2. Homozygous embryos are semi-viable. The effect of the Su(var)2-11 allele is slightly reduced in heterozygotes with Df(2R)M41A10 (which lacks 2R heterochromatin). The extent of hemizygous lethality is dramatically enhanced in the presence of extra heterochromatin (attachedXX/Y females) whereas the lethality did not occur in the absence of the Y (X/O males).

Dominant suppressor effect for position-effect variegation. Homozygous lethal and semi-sterile in males.

Semilethal in females. Dominant suppressor of w variegation caused by In(1)wm4h, T(1;4)wm5, T(1;4)wm258-18, Dp(1;3)wvco and T(1;4)wm258-21. Significantly decreases heterochromatinisation in flies carrying T(1;4)wm258-21. Dominant suppressor of bw variegation caused by In(2LR)bwV32g, In(2R)bwVDe1, In(2LR)bwV1 and T(2;3)bwVDe3. Dominant suppressor of bb variegation caused by Dp(1;3)wvco and sc variegation caused by In(1)sc8.

Su(var)205unspecified shows semi-lethality with Su(var)2-11 in females with a Y chromosome.

Eye pigmentation in lt11/lt1 flies is reduced if the flies are also carrying Su(var)208unspecified/Su(var)2-11 or Su(var)2-1v9/Su(var)2-11. XY lt11/lt1; Su(var)2-1v9/Su(var)2-11 males have reduced viability, which is restored in XO males. Eye pigmentation is reduced and viability is essentially wild-type in lt11/+ flies that are also carrying or Su(var)2-1v9 and E(ltv)319319.

The effect of loss of one copy of Su(var)2-11 can be rescued by P-element mediated transformation with Su(var)3-7.
