    Heterozygotes show a strong trx-like phenotype. Partial transformation of the third thoracic segment (T3) into T2, the fifth abdominal segment (A5) into A4 and A6 into A5 is seen. A7 is rarely modified. Transformation of T1 towards T2 (a reduced number of sex comb teeth and the appearance of ectopic apical bristles on the T1 legs) is also seen. Homozygotes and hemizygotes die as fully developed pharate adults which can survive for 1 or 2 days if dissected out of the pupal case. A5 to A4 and A6 to A5 transformations are more extreme in E(z)Trm/In(3L)Ez2 hemizygotes than in E(z)Trm heterozygotes. Homozygotes also have a very strong trx-like phenotype; not only the haltere but also the central part of the humerus is also transformed into wing tissue (indicating transformation of T3 and T1 towards T2 respectively). A7 is also partially transformed into A6 (indicated by the appearance of a rudimentary seventh tergite) in both homozygotes and E(z)Trm/In(3L)Ez2 hemizygotes. The ventral genitalia of both sexes are frequently replaced by leg tissue in homozygotes and clones of anterior wing tissue appear on the posterior wing blades. E(z)son1 strongly suppresses the trx-like phenotype (transformation of T1 to T2, T3 to T2 and A5 to A4) seen in E(z)Trm heterozygotes; phenotype is nearly wild-type. E(z)son2 strongly suppresses the trx-like phenotype (transformation of T1 to T2, T3 to T2 and A5 to A4) seen in E(z)Trm heterozygotes. Some weak transformation of T3 to T2 (appearance of apical bristles on the third leg) is still seen. E(z)son3 strongly suppresses the trx-like phenotype (transformation of T1 to T2, T3 to T2 and A5 to A4) seen in E(z)Trm heterozygotes; phenotype is nearly wild-type. 50% of E(z)60/E(z)Trm flies show weak transformation of T1 to T2, 75% show weak transformation of T3 to T2, 24% show strong transformation of T3 to T2 and 100% show transformation of A5 to A4. The E(z)Trm phenotype is suppressed by sodium butyrate.
