Drives expression in larval and adult pacemaker neurons, including I-LNv and s-LNv neurons, a pair of dorsal anterior lateral neurons of the protocerebrum, and lateral neurons. Also drives expression in a number of midline neurons in late embryos.

ScerGAL4per.PK drives expression in a subset of neurons in the ventral nerve cord - VGlut1 positive period-positive median segmental interneurons and a pair of more lateral neurons. Period-positive median segmental interneurons directly interact with EcollexARapGAP1-OK6 expressing motor neurons as shown by a positive GFP reconstitution across synaptic partners (GRASP) signal.

ScerGAL4per.PK transcript is expressed in the RP2, aCC, pCC, U1 and U2 neurons. It is also often detected in the U3 and two EL neurons. Lineage analysis shows that ScerGAL4per.PK is expressed in the UMI and VUM interneurons and in the interneurons that originate from neuroblasts MNB, NB2-1 and NB4-1.

Expression of ScerGAL4per.PK is seen in cells located near sensilla on the head capsule, thorax and abdomen of the adult. Expression of ScerGAL4per.PK in seen within the abdominal portion of the adult midgut. Expression in the mouth is restricted to the posterior region. Fibres from neurons expressing ScerGAL4per.PK enter the distal most layer of the medulla. Expression of ScerGAL4per.PK is seen in undefined cells located near to the lobula, and in a pair of cells on either side of the esophagus in the frontal cortex which project along posteriorly along the esophageal foramen. The neurons located dorsolateral to the antennal lobes can be subdivided into two groups: a larger one located dorsomedial to the smaller one. Neurons from both of these groups project to the central complex, with intense arborization in the ellipsoid body and the lateral triangle.

Putative per-expressing neurons in the adult brain: lateral neurons, dorsal neurons, Hofbauer-Buchner cells. Weak expression in some photoreceptors. Specific neurons in the brain in which endogenous PER has not been detected, such as neurons in central complex and pars intercerebralis.
