ush2 mutant embryos exhibit an increased number of cardioblasts.
Homozygous mutants show an increase in cardial cells during embryonic development. There is also an increase in the number of eve expressing pericardial cells seen - from three per cluster in wild-type, to 5-6 per cluster in homozygous mutants.
In ush2 mutant embryos the dorsal trunk is continuous and secondary branching is indistinguishable from wild-type.
Apoptotic cells are visible in the amnioserosa of stage 11-12 homozygous embryos.
The posterior half of the abdomen is folded back on the anterior half, due to a failure of germband retraction, resulting in an eponymous phenotype. At full germband extension A8 is often opposite A1 or T3. Head involution fails and major head parts are missing. The head is pulled posteriorly away from the anterior of the vitelline membrane, leaving empty the anterior ~40% of the egg. There is often a hole in the cuticle spanning the juxtaposed head and tail. Some components of the head skeleton are absent or rudimentary, including the dorsal arms, dorsal bridge and vertical plate. The filzkorper are often widely separated. Anti-β-tubulin staining reveals a premature loss of amnioserosa cells after stage 11. The amnioserosa undergoes programmed cell death.
Homozygous embryos exhibit strong germ band retraction defects.
Germband retraction and dorsal closure fail to occur in homozygous embryos.
Nondefective in gonad assembly.
Does not interact with RpII140wimp maternal effect.
Suppression of tor13D embryos: increase in proportion of embryos that formed cuticle and decrease in proportion of embryos that formed empty sacs.

Both midgut primordia extend normally along the visceral mesoderm and the yolk is completely engulfed by the endoderm.
