Approximately 30% of mutant ovarioles have either empty or abnormal germaria in 7 day old homozygous females. This germ cell defect becomes more severe with age.

The average number of germline stem cells per germarium is reduced in 14 day old eff8/effs1782 females compared to controls.

The average number of germline stem cells per germarium is reduced in 7 and 14 day old eff8/effmer4 and eff8/effmer1 females compared to controls.

Homozygous eff8 germline stem cell clones are lost more quickly from ovaries compared to control clones.

No defects are seen in axon pruning during metamorphosis, though a moderate proliferation defect is seen when somatic clones are made in the neuroblast.

About 22% of egg chambers from eff8/effRK1859 females, and 5% of egg chambers from eff8 homozygote mothers contain 32-cell cysts. Large fusomes with an increased number of branches relative to wild-type are also seen.

Mitotic but not male meiotic telomere behaviour is abnormal in homozygotes. eff8/effΔ73A and eff8/effΔ112 transheterozygotes show abnormal telomere behaviour during both mitosis and male meiosis.

Nurse cell chromocenters are increased dramatically in size.

Elongated spermatid nuclei are dispersed. Males are semi-sterile.

mr1/mr2 enhances the loss of germline stem cells that is seen in eff8/effmer1 females, such that the rate of germline stem cell loss is more rapid in the double mutant females.

Expression of CycAScer\UAS.P\T.cCa under the control of Scer\GAL4nos.UTR.T:Hsim\VP16 strongly enhances the germline stem cell phenotype in eff8/effmer1 females, such that germline stem cell loss is more rapid and more severe in the double mutant females.

The 32 cell cyst phenotype is suppressible by adding heterozygous CycA01545, reducing the proportion of abnormal cysts seen to less than 6%. The addition of Df(2R)59AB also suppresses the phenotype, lowering the number of abnormal cysts seen by threefold. Df(2L)r10 however has no discernible effect on this phenotype.

The extent of ectopic wing vein formation and roughening of the eye found in Scer\GAL4GMR.PF CblDv.Scer\UAS flies is enhanced in a eff8 mutant background.
