spookier (spok) encodes a cytochrome P450 involved in ecdysteroid biosynthesis that is expressed primarily in the prothoracic gland and is localized in the endoplasmic reticulum. Genetic evidence suggests that the product of spok acts with the products of sro and Cyp6t3 to catalyze conversion of 7 dehydrocholesterol to delta4, diketol during the ecdysone biosynthetic pathway. CYTOCHROME P450 - CYP2 CLAN -: Cytochrome P450, or CYP genes, constitute one of the largest families of genes, with representatives in virtually all living organisms. P450 enzymes are heme-thiolate proteins best known for their monooxygenase role, catalyzing the transfer of one atom of molecular oxygen to a substrate and reducing the other to water. The CYP2 clan includes D. melanogaster CYP18 and CYP303-307 family genes. CYP2 members have diverse roles and are widely considered as "environmental response genes" in mammalian species.
