Involved in tracheal paracellular barrier functions mediated by epithelial cell septate junctions (PubMed:19502482). Involved in paracellular barrier functions mediated by glial cell septate junctions in the peripheral nervous system, including the chordotonal organs, but not the hemolymph-brain barrier (the insect blood-brain barrier) of the central nervous system (PubMed:19502482). Required for septate junction assembly, possibly by organizing the preassembly and transport of septate junction proteins such as dlg1/disks large 1, Nrx-IV/Neurexin-IV and the claudin protein kune (PubMed:19502482, PubMed:28977027). Involved in chitin fiber organization during tracheal development (PubMed:19502482). Secreted, possibly in association with extracellular vesicles, to act non-autonomously on tissues distant from its site of expression (PubMed:19502482, PubMed:28977027).
