Description

y promoter and the su(Hw) binding region have been deleted.

Deletion of gypsy nucleotides 1 to 4230, including the 5' LTR, the su(Hw) binding sites and a large part of the coding region.

Deletion of both y and gypsy sequences, removing the gypsy 5' LTR and the sites that interact with su(Hw), and the y promoter and first exon. The distal breakpoint is in the internal portion of gypsy at +4230bp (gypsy coordinates as in FBrf0045014), and the proximal breakpoint is in the y intron at +519bp (y coordinates as in FBrf0044235). y2/y59b females are almost wild-type.

y59b males have significantly reduced mating success compared to control males. The Dp(1;f)1187 minichromosome rescues the mating success of these mutants. y59b adults lack pigmentation throughout the body, the wings, bristles, aristae and tarsal claws. The sex combs of y59b males have a lighter colour than wild type.

Body colour: pigmentation score (where 1 = null/nearly null, 5 = wild type/nearly wild type): y59b/yP1\loxP.eve-700gin : 4-4+ (wing), 4-4+ (body), y59b/yP1\loxP.hsp70-700gin : 5 (wing), 5 (body), y59b/yP1\loxP.w-700gin : 4 (wing), 4 (body).

Allelic series of reduced male mating success phenotype: y59b = yD91 >= y3d > ya77 >= y2S.

Phenotype suggests the region responsible for trans repression of transcription is deleted in the gypsy element.
