Expression of fruNP0021 in the developing eye under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF generates a rough eye phenotype.
fruNP0021 heterozygotes exhibit an mAL cluster composed of 30 cells in males and 5 cells in females, as in controls.
Homozygous fruNP0021 , and fruNP0021/frusat mutants exhibit a loss of the male specific muscle of Lawrence. Mutant also exhibit markedly reduced courtship behaviour towards males as well as females. fruNP0021/frusat, fruNP0021/fru1, fruNP0021/Df(3R)Cha7 males have on average 5 "neurons medially located, just above antennal lobe" (mALs), compared to ~30 in wild-type males. The number in females (~5) is unaffected. Homozygous fruNP0021 males have no mALs with ipsolateral projections are observed, they have have contralateral, bifurcating projections (similar to the ones seen in females).

Expression of hbJF03309 in mAL neuroblast clones (using MARCM and Scer\GAL4fru-NP0021, results in the ensemble of mAL neurons show intersexual characteristics; although the cluster retains male properties in that it is composed of 30 cells with the ipsilateral neurite, it also exhibits a female-like branching pattern of the contralateral neurite in the subesophageal ganglion. The contralateral neurite extending to the subesophageal ganglion is located more anteriorly in females than in males.
