The l(3)73Ah transcript is expressed throughout development, with lowest levels in larvae, slightly higher levels in pupae, and maximal levels in adults. Adult female expression is higher than adult male expression; the signal detected in embryos is possibly maternal. Radioactive in situ hybridization with a l(3)73Ah-specific probe shows high levels of expression in the fat body of larvae and adults, and in the adult female ovary.

l(3)73Ah amino acid sequence comparison reveals a striking homology to the entire sequence of mammalian oncogenes mel-18 and bmi-1 and to the zinc-finger containing N-terminal domain of Psc and Su(z)2. l(3)73Ah shares 3' untranslated sequence with tra. l(3)73Ah transcription is temporally and spatially regulated with maximal expression in adult females.
