The testis specificity index was calculated from modENCODE tissue expression data by Vedelek et al., 2018 to indicate the degree of testis enrichment compared to other tissues. Scores range from -2.52 (underrepresented) to 5.2 (very high testis bias).
btz protein is first expressed in germarium region 2, then accumulates in oocytes in germarium region 2b. At oogenesis stage S4, btz is localized to the posterior of the oocyte, then begins to lose posterior enrichment at oogenesis stage S6. By oogenesis stage 8, btz protein has dispersed throughout the cytoplasm of the oocyte. At oogenesis stage S9, btz is again enriched at the posterior of the oocyte, then begins to disperse into the cytoplasm at the beginning of oogenesis stage S10; by oogenesis stage S10b btz is completely dispersed. From oogenesis stage S4, btz protein is also concentrated in a punctate pattern around the nuclei of nurse cells, with a similar distribution in follicle cells beginning at oogenesis stage S6; this pattern is suggestive of an association with the nuclear pores of these cells. btz protein colocalizes with mago in a dense cloud around the ring canals, and at the posterior pole of stage 9 oocytes.

Based on the phenotype where osk mRNA becomes trapped at the anterior and fails to reach the posterior pole, the gene is named after Willem Barentsz, a seventeenth century explorer whose boat became frozen in the ice off Novaya Zemlya during an attempt to find a passage past the North pole.
