Lifeact is a 17 residue peptide (MGVADLIKKFESISKEE) that binds filamentous actin. It corresponds to the N-terminal 17 amino acid residues of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae ABP140 gene ( SGDID:S000005765 ); the sequence is conserved among close relatives of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, but is absent in other organisms. Lifeact does not interfere with actin dynamics in vitro and in vivo. Lifeact can be thus used to visualize actin dynamics, for example by fusing it to an appropriate fluorescent protein (adapted from PMID:18536722).
