Detailed Description

Approximately 6% of dm1 homozygous females survive to adulthood, compared with 85% of sibling dm1/Y males.

dm1/dm2 and dm1/dm3 females are small with slender bristles and are sterile.

Homozygous females and hemizygous males smaller than wild-type flies. The hair density in dm1 wings is the same, indicating that the cells are of comparable size, indicating that dm1 wings are smaller than wild-type wings because they contain fewer cells. dm1/dmPG45 females produce eggs with a 2-3% hatching rate.

Overt small and slender bristles and body. Mutant flies carrying dmScer\UAS.cSAa under the control of Scer\GAL4sca-537.4 demonstrate a marked increase in the size of the micro- and macrochaetae of the adult cuticle. Mutant flies carrying dmhs.PSA also exhibit rescue of the bristle and body size.

Germ cells and follicle cells are defective, failing to migrate and undergo the transition to columnar epithelium.

Bristles and body small and slender. Viability excellent. Females sterile. Oocyte cyst development abnormal; nurse-cell nuclei swell in stage 7, subsequently becoming pycnotic (King and Burnett, 1957); cuboidal follicle cells covering developing oocyte in stage 8 fail to show normal growth and degenerate rather than becoming columnar (King and Vanoucek, 1960). Chambers degenerate around stage 8; phenotype of homozygous dm less severe than that of dm hemizygous with dm- deficiency (King and Vanoucek, 1960). RK1.

Approximately 76% of sisAunspecified dm1 trans-heterozygous female offspring from dm1 fathers mated to sisAunspecified females survive.

Approximately 24% of scsisB-1 dm1 trans-heterozygous female offspring from dm1 fathers mated to scsisB-1 females survive.

All run3 dm1 trans-heterozygous female offspring from dm1 fathers mated to run3 females survive.

Females trans-heterozygous for SxlfP7B0 and dm1 are approximately two-thirds as viable as their dm1/+ siblings.

SxlN.Hsp83.T:Ecol\lacZ females that are trans-heterozygous for SxlfP7B0 and dm1 are two-thirds as viable as their SxlN.Hsp83.T:Ecol\lacZ SxlfP7B0/+ sisters.

More than 90% of dm1/+ ; Egfrf2/+ embryos show severe defects in the nervous system at stage 17.

The ectopic bristle phenotype seen in N55e11/+ females is partially suppressed if they are also heterozygous for dm1.

Heterozygosity for ago1 increase the female body length of dm1 flies by about 12%. The wings of dm1 ; ago1/+ adults are about 15% larger than those of dm1 adults. This suppression is due to an increase in the number of cells. dm1 ; ago1/+ females lay eggs that can give rise to viable larvae.
