scheggia (sea) encodes a carrier protein of the inner mitochondrial membrane that plays a central role in fatty acid and sterol biosynthesis. It catalyses an electroneutral exchange of citrate for another tricarboxylate, a dicarboxylate (L-malate), or phosphoenolpyruvate across the inner mitochondrial membrane.
