Complementation test between the "hfw1" allele described by FBrf0018667 with any "swi" mutant alleles has not been possible, since the "hfw1" stock was lost by the time that "swi" mutant alleles were obtained. "hfw" and "swi" map to the same cytological interval and mutants show similar phenotypes, making it very likely that they are allelic.
hfw has been located within a puff on the telomeric chromosome of D.funebris, D.virilis, D.hydei, D.repleta, D.mercatorum and D.paranaensis, within a puff on the distal part of the X chromosome of D.kanekoi and within a puff on the proximal portion of the X chromosome of D.pseudoobscura.pseudoobscura.

Hormone incubation of mutant salivary glands in vitro and hormone injection of mutants demonstrates the hfw gene product is necessary for induction of late puffs.
Recessive lethal; for some alleles, development arrested in third instar, the anterior half initiating puparium formation while the posterior half remains larval. Extent of development influenced by administration of ecdysone and by temperature; pupariation occasionally completed at 18oC. Some alleles yield a few survivors with characteristic wing abnormalities and occasionally swollen abdomens.
