UAS regulatory sequences drive expression of two copies of a 1012bp portion of the smo coding region one codon 3' of the initiating methionine which are arranged in tail-to-tail orientation. The construct is designed to produce dsRNA.

Expression of smodsRNA.Scer\UAS.WIZ under the control of Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1 or Scer\GAL4T80 results in partial proximal fusions of longitudinal wing veins 3 and 4 near the anterior cross vein.

The mutant wing vein phenotype produced by expression of smodsRNA.Scer\UAS.WIZ under the control of Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1 is completely suppressed by co-expression of smoScer\UAS.cCa.

The mutant wing vein phenotype produced by expression of smodsRNA.Scer\UAS.WIZ under the control of Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1 is enhanced by smo3; the extent of fusion of veins 3 and 4 is increased.

Flies expressing smodsRNA.Scer\UAS.WIZ under the control of Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1 show a mild fusion of veins L3 and L4.
