Hsap\RAF1 and phl are functionally similar in that either can induce ventral follicle cells to assume a dorsal fate.

(Brand and Perrimon, 1994)

A constitutively active form of Hsap\RAF1 can trigger tll and hkb transcription in Drosophila embryos and can specify elements of the terminal body pattern. Results indicate a strong functional conservation between Drosophila and mammalian raf proteins and argues the localised activity of phl normally carries spatial information specifying the end portions of the body.
