Expression is observed in the outer nerve layer of the antennal lobe.

Scer\GAL4ato.3.6 drives expression in the ato and acj6 positive dorsal cluster neurons throughout development. During the late third instar larval stage, dorsal cluster neuron express Dl and N and their axons grow towards the developing medulla before most retract back into the lobula complex 25-50 hours after puparium formation.

ato expression is observed in larval photoreceptor precursors starting at embryonic stage 10 and is gone by stage 13.

Scer\GAL4ato.3.6 drives expression in a cluster of 30-40 neurons in the dorsolateral central protocerebrum in each hemisphere, which innervate the ipsi- and contralateral lobula and medulla.

Expression is observed in the proneural region of the antennal disc, and subsequently in all cells of the coelonconic sense organs.

In embryonic brain, initially expressed in the sensory organ precursors of the embryonic CHOs. At stage 13, 3-5 cells in each brain hemisphere initiate expression; this expression transient and is no longer detectable in stage 15 embryos. In larval brain, expression is reinitiated at L3 in a cluster of 25-30 neurons in each brain lobe. Each cluster of neurons sends a bundle of axons ventrally and then contralaterally toward the opposite optic lobes; at the junction between the central brain and the developing lobula, the axons derived from the contralateral cluster branch out of the commissure, into the developing optic lobes. In adult brain, expressed in a dorsal cluster and in two ventral clusters of neurons, which extend into elaborate axonal innervation patterns in the optic lobes, lobula, and medulla.
