Gene Summary
viking (vkg) encodes a subunit of Collagen IV and a major component of basement membranes. It is secreted by haemocytes and fat body cells and is required for the normal morphogenesis of many tissues. It also contributes to TGF-beta signalling in the early embryo and the developing Malpighian tubules. [Date last reviewed: 2019-03-21] (FlyBase Gene Snapshot)
Also Known As

collagen IV, collagen IV α2, l(2)01209, DmColA2, colIV

COLLAGENS -
Collagens are major structural components of extracellular matrix. (Adapted from FBrf0230242.)
Summary (Interactive Fly)

along with Collagen IV, the main component of basement membranes - synthesized by the fat body, secreted to the hemolymph, and incorporated into the basement membrane - determines organ shape - regulates BMP signaling

If you don't see a structure in the viewer, refresh your browser.
Model Confidence:
  • Very high (pLDDT > 90)
  • Confident (90 > pLDDT > 70)
  • Low (70 > pLDDT > 50)
  • Very low (pLDDT < 50)

AlphaFold produces a per-residue confidence score (pLDDT) between 0 and 100. Some regions with low pLDDT may be unstructured in isolation.

Testis-specificity index

The testis specificity index was calculated from modENCODE tissue expression data by Vedelek et al., 2018 to indicate the degree of testis enrichment compared to other tissues. Scores range from -2.52 (underrepresented) to 5.2 (very high testis bias).

-0.99

Identification: Enhancer trap expression pattern survey for loci expressed in the ring gland.

Identified in a screen for modifiers of the Dfd13/Dfd3 mutant phenotype. Shows no interaction with the Pc mutant phenotype.

vkg has been cloned and characterised.

May be the same as Cg25C.

Identified in an enhancer-trap screen for insertions expressed in the fat body and haemocytes. May encode a collagen.

vkg encodes a collagen IV α2 protein.

vkg is a member of the haemocyte and fat body enhancer detector strains.
