Adult flies in which Duox expression is silenced show a marked increase in mortality rate even after a minor infection through ingestion of microbe-contaminated food.
Flies bearing dominant Cy mutations lose the curly wing phenotype when exposed to fluorescent light. There are two sensitive periods for this effect: late embryogenesis and the first half of the pupal stage. Daylight and standard tungsten light do not have the suppressive effect.
In a screen for lethal mutations that fail to complement Df(2L)C144, several mutations were isolated that showed some interaction with existing Cy alleles.

Cy removed from In(2L)Cy still causes a local reduction in crossing over in the ed-cl region (Sederoff).

'Curly' ('Cy') was shown to correspond to the 'Duox' (CG3131) gene in FBrf0230212. The merged gene was briefly called 'Cy' in FlyBase (based on precedence of that symbol), but this has been changed to 'Duox' for pragmatic reasons: 'Duox' has been the FlyBase symbol associated with the CG3131 gene model since 2005; several recent papers and constructs exist that use the 'Duox' nomenclature; the authors of FBrf0230212 refer to the gene/protein as 'duox'/'Duox' and use 'Curly'/'Cy' to refer specifically to the mutations. The original Cy[1] allele that is prevalent on Cy-associated aberrations has become 'Duox[Cy]' to recognise its history and keep it user-friendly.
