ANTENNAL IONOTROPIC CO-RECEPTORS -: Ionotropic Receptors (IR) co-receptors are part of the IR family. They are broadly, but selectively, expressed in antennal sensory neurons in Drosophila. Some antenneal IRs only form functional odor-responsive ion channels as a heteromeric complex with an IR co-receptor. (Adapted from FBrf0222310).

Protein Function (UniProtKB)

Ionotropic receptor coreceptor, which is part of a neural sensory system that provides the neural basis for the detection of amino acid taste and detection of low-salt (PubMed:23766326, PubMed:27982028, PubMed:28099851, PubMed:34867202). Coreceptors complex with conventional ionotropic receptors to form chemosensory units, providing sensitive and prolonged signaling (PubMed:27982028). Ir76b is an integral part of the functional ionotropic receptors essential for the detection and preference of low-salt food in gustatory receptor neurons (PubMed:23766326). Acts as a coreceptor for functional ionotropic receptors that mediate amino acid sensing in tarsal taste hairs (PubMed:27982028, PubMed:28099851, PubMed:34867202, PubMed:38351746). Ir76b-containing neurons are involved in the rewarding, but not for the punishing effect of the amino acids (PubMed:38351746).
