Gene Summary
Ionotropic receptor 8a (Ir8a) encodes a member of the Ionotropic Receptor (IR) family of variant ionotropic glutamate receptors. It functions as a co-receptor together with ligand-specific IRs (in a probable heterotetrameric complex) to detect diverse organic acids. [Date last reviewed: 2019-03-07] (FlyBase Gene Snapshot)

Gene Group (FlyBase)
ANTENNAL IONOTROPIC CO-RECEPTORS -
Ionotropic Receptors (IR) co-receptors are part of the IR family. They are broadly, but selectively, expressed in antennal sensory neurons in Drosophila. Some antenneal IRs only form functional odor-responsive ion channels as a heteromeric complex with an IR co-receptor. (Adapted from FBrf0222310).
Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Ionotropic receptor coreceptor, which is part of a neural sensory system involved in male courtship (PubMed:19135896, PubMed:21220098, PubMed:38114448). Coreceptors complex with conventional ionotropic receptors to form chemosensory units, providing sensitive and prolonged signaling (PubMed:21220098). Together with Ir84a, Ir8a is an integral part of the functional ionotropic receptors involved in male courtship in response to food-derived odors, such as phenylacetic acid and phenylacetaldehyde, which are widely found in fruit and other plant tissues that serve as food sources and oviposition sites (PubMed:38114448).
(UniProt, Q9W365)
Summary (Interactive Fly)

a member of a novel family of chemosensory receptor ion channels - variant ionotropic glutamate receptor-like protein - expressed on antennal neurons

Structure
Protein 3D structure   (Predicted by AlphaFold)   (AlphaFold entry Q9W365)

If you don't see a structure in the viewer, refresh your browser.
Model Confidence:
  • Very high (pLDDT > 90)
  • Confident (90 > pLDDT > 70)
  • Low (70 > pLDDT > 50)
  • Very low (pLDDT < 50)

AlphaFold produces a per-residue confidence score (pLDDT) between 0 and 100. Some regions with low pLDDT may be unstructured in isolation.
